Important: Always apply fertilizers according to label instructions
Your soil test indicates, on a yearly basis
per 100 sq. feet:
• Nitrogen (0.12 lb) is needed
• Phosphate (0.25 lb) is needed
• Potassium (0.2 lb) is needed
See below for more information on each
Example 1: Manufactured Fertilizers
- For established or new plantings
- Nitrogen: Apply 0.125 lb 46-0-0 (Urea fertilizer) per 100 sq ft in the spring
- Phosphorus: Apply 0.6 lb 0-46-0 (Triple Super Phosphate - TSP) per 100 sq ft in the spring
- Potassium: Apply 0.4 lb 0-0-60 (Potash) per 100 sq ft in the spring
Characteristics: More readily available for plant uptake, more concentrated form of nutrients, generally less expensive per pound of fertilizer nutrient.
OR
Example 2: Natural Organic Fertilizers
- For established or new plantings
- Nitrogen: Apply 0.5 lb 12-0-0 (Dried blood fertilizer) per 100 sq ft in the spring
- Phosphorus: Apply 2.1 lb 4-12-0 (Bone meal) per 100 sq ft in the spring
- Potassium: Apply 3.7 lb 0-0-6 (Green sand) per 100 sq ft in the spring
Characteristics: Nutrients released more slowly, can be more expensive if high rates are needed.
Lime recommendation for mineral soils
For non acid loving plants soil pH is good, no adjustment necessary.
Notes:
- Approximate conversion of lb of nutrient needed to cups of nutrient needed:
- Fertilizers (0.1 lb = 1/4 cup)
- Ground limestone (0.1 lb = 1/8 cup)
- For established planting reduce nitrogen rate if shoot growth exceeds 18 inches of new growth.
- Single nutrient fertilizers can usually be found at lawn and garden centers or farmer fertilizer dealers.
- For the proper way to fertilize trees and shrubs see the link to "A homeowner's guide to nutrition and fertilization of landscape trees and shrubs".
- If using green sand and is different from 6%, divide 6 by in the product and multiply recommended amount by this factor.
